My Beeches

Young Beeches in Snow

My beeches are a budding
Beech Trees Budding
Spring can’t be far away!
The air will soon be warm again.
I wish it were TODAY!

Of course, today it’s snowing
A gentle, dusting snow.
The weather men say a storm’s afoot,
But they don’t really know!

It’s funny how they warn us:
Beech Leaf
We’ll have a foot!  Dear me!
They then divide the foot in half
And the storm slips out to sea!

But trust me, just ignore them once
And don’t prepare at all.
That’s the day we’ll get two feet
And you’ll be at the mall
With nothing but a shawl,
So listen to them, Y’all!

If you didn't know it, my apartment is surrounded by American beech trees, black birch, oaks and hemlocks. Beech have a lovely, silvery gray, smooth bark.  Remember Beechnut gum?  Well, don't try chewing on MY beech nuts.  They're like little rocks inside prickly balls.  I love my beech trees though.  I love how the little ones keep their leaves through the winter and they start looking almost like a stand of trees from an elven forest.  But then, that's just my over active imagination at work.  Carry on.
